Ladies and gentlemen,
I am very glad to have been asked to speak to you tonight.
As advisor to the drug safety committee
and to the medical research council,
I have a rather special interest in therapeutics and pharmacology,
and in particular in the development of new drugs.

Here is a test for motor activity.
Hamsters are placed in these treadmills,
and an electronic revolution counter
keeps check on 50 animals at once.
During these tests animals are observed,
and the mode of death gives a first idea
of how the test drug may work.

Then come the more specific tests.
Electrodes are implanted in the brain
so the EEG can be taken from different brain centers.
The electrodes can then guided
within half a milimeter to desired nucleus.
The animals can live quite happily with these implants
For months or years

Finally the animals are sacrificed
and complete pathological examinations are made.
